When the Buddha attained enlightenment, he realised that all beings without exception have the same nature and the same potential for enlightenment: this is called buddha nature. When we speak of Buddha, we usually think of the Indian prince Gautama Siddhartha, who followed the path from life in the palace, the wandering seeker, to the man who was enlightened under the Bodhi tree in India more than 2500 years ago.
However, Buddha also has a much deeper meaning: it is the original awareness that we all have, a state of mind that has fully awakened from its ignorance and opened up to the qualities of boundless love and compassion. A Buddha has put an end to suffering and frustration once and for all and discovered lasting, immortal happiness and peace.
The Mahayana Uttaratantra Shastra is a commentary by Arya Maitreya, who explains buddha nature in a profound way. This text is essential for all Mahayana disciples and an important commentary on Prajnaparamita. Khenpo Chöying Dorje will teach us this text so that we can understand what Buddha nature really means.
